In an era of pop-ups and fast trends, we celebrate permanence. Twenty years of bespoke furniture. Decades of beachfront hospitality. A century-old farming legacy turned nursery. These are some of many businesses that have earned their place in our coastal story.

📍 Zinkwazi Beach (Far North)
Zinkwazi Beach Café, or “The Little Tea Room” as it is known by locals, is a landmark coffee shop, takeaway, and convenience hub on the corner of Glen and Nkwazi Drive. This long-standing coffee shop and primary local convenience store, though not formally documented in public records, has served the Zinkwazi Beach community for many years with delicious snacks, drinks, and a fairly good selection for its size.

📍 Stanger / KwaDukuza Inlands

Kearsney Manor is a historic English-colonial manor built by Sir James Liege Hulett circa 1870 on an original sugar estate along the R74. Kearsney Manor began as a coffee, tea and sugar farm before becoming home to Kearsney College in 1921 and later St Luke’s Home of Healing. Lovingly restored in 2004 by new owners Erica and Paul Kalil as a cherished heritage guesthouse and wedding venue with 19 luxury rooms, a 100-year-old chapel, a grand reception venue, conference facilities, in-house catering, bar, and pool.

📍 Umhlali Village & Surrounds
Umhlali Preparatory School - This historic local primary school is right in the heart of Umhlali. Since 1918, Umhlali Preparatory has been far more than a school; it’s a vibrant community with a shared history. For over a century, it has stood as a cornerstone of the North Coast, where generations of families have woven their stories together.

Umhlali Country Club - Located just inland of the main highway and home to an 18-hole Peter Matkovich golf course, squash, tennis and bowls. The Country Club has a proud tennis history, with the original Umhlali Tennis Club becoming the Country Club’s tennis section in 1961 with five courts.

Crocodile Creek - The popular reptile park and tourist attraction located along the oThongathi River just south-west of Umhlali, was established in 1983 by Peter and Sheila Watson. Crocodile Creek is 43 years old this year and is home to over 2,000 Nile crocodiles, alligators and snakes. The Watson family’s passion for conservation has made it one of the North Coast’s beloved tourist attractions.

📍 Salt Rock
Salt Rock Hotel - The iconic beachfront resort that anchors the local history of the immediate coast opened in 1933 by Basil Hulett, grandson of Sir Liege Hulett, and his wife, Gwen. The legendary Salt Rock Hotel grew from what was a 9-hole coastal golf course and thatched clubhouse. Its famed tidal pool was built for guests, while its name echoes from King Shaka’s handmaidens who once harvested salt from the rocks.

Salt Rock Caravan Park - The lush, beachfront campsite directly attached to the Salt Rock Hotel property was officially included in 1964 by the Ballitoville (now Ballito) town plan as a caravan park on Compensation Beach. Its early seaside holiday history intertwines with the 1930s Salt Rock Caravan Park and the iconic Dolphin Holiday Resort.

Salt Rock Nursery - A well-known green-finger staple sits on historic agricultural land surveyed in 1925 as part of George Hulett’s 10-acre farm. Rooted in Salt Rock’s litchi and sugarcane heritage, the nursery now offers everything from established trees to microgreens and local produce for gardening enthusiasts.

Pam Golding Properties - As one of Ballito’s longest-standing property brands, they have served the Dolphin Coast since about 2007. With almost two decades on the ground, area principal David Cameron has witnessed Ballito’s evolution from a small coastal town into a flourishing hub, driven by King Shaka Airport and major estate development.

Inglewood Grass and Nursery - Rooted in Chaka’s Rock since 1986, this nursery is pure North Coast heritage. Owner Andrew Reynolds, a qualified horticulturist, grows instant lawn on farms in Tinley Manor and Glendale.

📍 Central Ballito

Opening first at Sage Centre in Salt Rock, White Summer found its long-term home at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre. Founded by trend forecaster Carmen after returning from the UK in 2006, she has created a go-to boutique for KZN designers and established herself as one of the most enduring independent retailers.

Passionate about fresh whole foods, Dawn de Beer launched Home Grown in February 2013. Now flourishing in a beautiful open space at The Market, the much-loved store stocks local organic produce, free-range eggs, organic milk and yoghurts, full-cream cheeses, hormone-free meats and artisan salamis.

Now celebrating 15 years at Ballito Lifestyle Centre, Beach & Beyond was founded by international swimwear designer Jenny Smart. What began as a boutique in 2011 has grown into one of South Africa’s most sought-after high-end beachwear labels, renowned for luxury swimwear, resort wear and exclusive international brands.
