Inside-Out Skincare

Why the Next Step in Your Beauty Routine May Be in the Supplement Drawer

For years, skincare has largely been defined by what we put on our faces. From serums, creams, acids and masks to in-clinic treatments, they have all dominated the beauty conversation. However, a growing movement is asking a different question: what if supporting the skin also means looking at what is happening beneath the surface?

Known as inside-out skincare, the approach brings nutrition, supplementation and cellular health into the beauty routine rather than treating them as separate conversations. It is the philosophy behind nutricosmetics, a category of ingestible beauty supplements designed to support the skin, hair and nails from within and complement, rather than replace, topical skincare.

We have become incredibly sophisticated about what we put on our skin, but we are still catching up when it comes to understanding what the skin needs from within,” says Toni Carroll, founder of My Beauty Luv and Supplement Sommelier. “Inside-out skincare does not mean we must replace a serum with a capsule, it means we must recognise that skin is living tissue, influenced by nutrition, oxidative stress, inflammation, hormones, lifestyle and the nutrients available to the body.

As we move into the warmer months, concerns such as dullness, uneven tone and pigmentation tend to move higher up the beauty agenda. Months of dry winter air, indoor heating and reduced humidity can leave skin looking dull, while brighter days bring renewed focus to glowing skin and the appearance of sun-related pigmentation.

“Pigmentation is a perfect example of why beauty has to be looked at more holistically,” says Carroll. “People often want one serum, one treatment or one supplement to fix everything. Skin does not work like that. Sun protection, lifestyle, hormones, nutrition, topical care and professional advice can all be part of the picture. A nutricosmetic can sit within that routine, but it should never pretend to replace the rest of it.” This is also where ingredients that support the skin from within become particularly interesting. Rather than trying to replace topical care or professional treatment, they can form part of a broader approach to supporting skin tone, resilience and healthy ageing.

Sakura has attracted scientific interest because the flower contains naturally occurring compounds including caffeoyl-beta-D-glucose and quercetin glucoside. Laboratory research into Sakura flower extract has examined its anti-glycation activity, its interaction with processes involved in collagen maintenance and its ability to inhibit tyrosinase activity, an enzyme involved in melanin formation. These findings are one reason the ingredient has become relevant to the wider conversation around skin ageing, tone and pigmentation, although ingestible beauty should always be viewed as supportive care rather than a medical treatment for a skin condition.

It was this connection between pigmentation, skin ageing and inside-out support that led My Beauty Luv to develop Face Blossom®. Rather than creating another multi-ingredient beauty blend, the brand chose to build the formula around one highly focused hero ingredient: Sakura flower petal extract.

Face Blossom® is designed for consumers looking to support a brighter, more even-looking complexion and healthy skin ageing from within. The formula is 100% pure, contains no fillers, binders, preservatives, additives, flavours, sugar, dairy, gluten or wheat, and uses a standardised 10:1 flower-petal extract. The ingredient is also EcoCert certified organic, with Halal and Kosher certification.

The Sakura flower itself adds to the product's distinctive story. Japanese Cherry Blossom blooms for only a short period each year, creating an ingredient associated with renewal, transience and spring. For Carroll, however, the appeal has to go beyond symbolism.

Carroll believes the next phase of beauty will increasingly see the bathroom cabinet and supplement drawer working together. Rather than chasing a single miracle ingredient, consumers are becoming more interested in routines that combine topical skincare, sun protection, professional treatments where appropriate, nutrition and targeted supplementation.
