The Waffle Society

If you think you know waffles, think again! The Waffle Society is out to prove that waffles can be more than a delicious dessert. Serving savoury and sweet combinations, breakfast, dinner and everything in-between, they’re taking the path less travelled to bring something unique to Ballito. The pink, candy-striped café sits, catching the best of the ocean breeze as the smell of freshly ground coffee wafts through the space.

Embracing the warm summer weather, we opted for cooler, healthy drinks: a cocktail from their signature menu, a chai frappé, and the mint smoothie from Propa. Starting off with the most important meal of the day, their breakfast selection balances decadence with healthy options. The Rise & Shine is a great example, with dark chocolate and coconut granola, fresh banana, berry compote, lime syrup, peanut butter crémeaux, yoghurt, accompanied by blueberry waffle bites. If a waffle doesn’t fit your vibe on that occasion, you can swap it out for sourdough toast like we did with the Smashin’ Avo; smashed avo, crumbly feta, crispy onions and a drizzle of hot honey makes for a wholesome breakfast.
The concept of savoury waffles had never appealed to me until the Corn Star and The Durban Bowl changed the way I see them forever. The corn, coriander, and mozzarella-stuffed waffle is a great base topped with lime and avocado mousse, salsa, charred corn, corn riblets and tortilla chips. All the waffles are beautifully and creatively presented and we heard several exclamations of delight as waffles were brought to neighbouring tables. For those looking for some heat, The Durban bowl is a medium chicken curry served with a spiced potato & coriander waffle, carrot salad and sambas; a creative fusion of Indian flavours. A creative infusion of Indian flavours. If you prefer, there are also gluten-free and vegan options so you can enjoy your waffle your way.

It’s safe to say that their signature Death by Chocolate and Unicorn waffles were the showstoppers of the afternoon! A chocolate waffle, piled with triple chocolate brownies, chocolate mousse, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, ice-cream, a chocolate spring roll and a condensed milk syringe was a treat for the chocolate lovers. Bright and colourful with candy floss, sprinkles, mini marshmallows, sour ribbons and an upturned cone served on top of a multi-coloured rainbow waffle, the Unicorn is impossible to miss and a firm favourite with the kids!
Waffles After Dark brings waffles to the fore as an evening meal with smaller tapas-style waffles elevated with adventurous toppings and sophisticated flavour combinations designed to pair with their cocktail menu and gorgeous wine list. Only available Thursday to Saturday from 5-9 p.m., we will definitely be back for one of their Thursday Ladies’ Nights!
