Why Eye Care?
When I started my career in ophthalmology at a regional hospital in Pietermaritzburg (Edendale Hospital), the immense gratitude of patients whose sight was restored after cataract surgery was heartwarming. Being able to give the gift of sight is extremely rewarding. I enjoy the intricate balance between clinical and surgical skills in the field of ophthalmology.
Rising Beyond Expectations
Setting up a private practice on my own as a woman was challenging. Balancing a demanding career in medicine with personal and family responsibilities can be difficult without a support system in place. There is often an internalised pressure to attain “Superwoman” standards and be perfectly present, both as a clinician and a mother for your family, increasing the risk of burnout. Women in fields like healthcare face implicit biases where their expertise and commitment to their careers are questioned more intensely than those of their male counterparts.
Advice
Prioritise your personal wellbeing: You cannot care for others if you don’t care for yourself! Always treat yourself with kindness.
