Breaking Ground - Thubelihle Khumalo

Motor Technician

by · August 21, 2026 · 2 min read

BMW motor technician Thubelihle is happiest with a toolbox in her hand and an engine waiting to be stripped apart. Every day presents a new challenge, and that’s exactly what she loves about her work. Whether she’s diagnosing faults, dismantling components or learning the latest BMW technology, no two days are ever the same.

Growing up on a farm in Ulundi, she developed a passion for mechanics long before she entered a workshop. Surrounded by uncles who spent a lot of time repairing cars in the backyard, she eagerly joined in, learning the basics before graduating to helping with tractor repairs.

After matric, she enrolled for a NATED course in diesel mechanics at Umfolozi TVET College, a subject she had thoroughly enjoyed at school. Her apprenticeship at BMW Ballito, where she completed her practical training, led to a permanent position thanks to her dedication and technical ability. Today, Thubelihle works on some of the world’s most sophisticated vehicles, combining technical expertise with problem-solving skills and a willingness to keep learning. Working in a profession traditionally dominated by men has presented challenges, particularly when tasks demand considerable physical strength. “I’ve had to find my own way of doing things,” she says, pointing to the challenge of lifting heavy 21-inch wheels. “You learn to work smarter.”

For Thubelihle, gender has never defined her ability. “Being female is just a gender,” she says. “I have the hands and the skills to do the job.” She credits her resilience to her physical and mental strength, as well as the Christian faith that guides her through life’s challenges.

At home, her 12-year-old daughter is still trying to understand her mother’s passion for engines and workshop life. But Thubelihle has noticed a growing curiosity. Perhaps, just as she once watched her uncles repairing cars and tractors on the family farm, another generation is discovering that talent has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with passion.
