A Tour from Above: BAC Helicopters

We are truly lucky to live on the North Coast, with its great weather, ocean views, and community lifestyle. So, what’s a better way to further explore our coastline than from the sky? BAC Helicopters has widened its horizon from Virginia Airport to its newly completed, second hangar at their Head Office in Imbonini Helistop, which allows visitors to take to the sky on a wonderful tour of our coast.

Established in 1992 as Bell Air Charter, BAC Helicopters has grown into a respected operator across Sub-Saharan Africa, specialising in diverse helicopter operations, particularly in remote African areas. The company has emerged as an industry leader by consistently applying a professional and safety-conscious approach and manages a substantial fleet of predominantly owned helicopters. Their services include logistics support, agricultural spraying, surveying, cargo transport, soil sampling, charters and tours.

The team invited us on a flight to test out their North Coast tour. We flew in a Long Ranger which can carry up to five passengers. It was both mine and Amy’s first time in a helicopter and what a delight it was! We were speechless throughout most of the unforgettable experience.

The flight started at their Head Office and followed the coastline from Willard Beach to Olwandle Estate, where we landed for a tour of the grounds. BAC Helicopters and Olwandle Estates, formerly known as Jex Estates, have curated beautiful packages for guests to enjoy a luxurious secluded picnic on the Estate during the helicopter experience. The Estate is a marine haven with diverse wildlife like humpback whales and dolphins.

Surrounded by serene dune forests, it offers an intimate getaway. Upon arrival, we were greeted with two of three houses. The oldest, dating back to 1887, radiates old farmhouse charm. Visitors are encouraged to feel at home, enjoy the surroundings, and appreciate the Estate’s history. Initially a working farm, Olwandle Estate has transformed over the years, with each house telling its unique story.

After soaking in the views, we took to the sky for our return, watching the waves crash, dogs chasing their balls on the beach, and couples taking a morning stroll from above. It’s so surreal being that high up, and it really makes you love our town even more. If you have never experienced the amazing aerial views of our North Coast, then this is your sign to book a tour! The helicopter tours also make the ideal surprise gift for a loved one with a taste for adventure.
