Looking after our bodies, inside and out, is essential for a healthy, happy and long life. We’ve spoken to a few health professionals about their fields of practice and how they can help you achieve the state of wellness you want.
COMPLETE DENTISTRY
Life expectancy for South Africans is higher today than it has ever been before. We live longer and better quality lives. Therefore, protecting and preserving oral health from a young age has become more important. The Cosmetic Dental Emporium believes that education plays a key role in developing self-care and fostering good oral-care habits early in life.
Health is a gift often undervalued until the lack thereof affects the way we live. Have your oral health checked frequently and consistently to allow for early detection. Problems can then be dealt with early on and the extent of the treatment needed to restore health and function is vastly reduced. Health is a personal matter and demands an intentional commitment to be sustained and improved. Whether you have a perfectly healthy smile or have neglected your oral health and now intend to set the record straight, The Cosmetic Dental Emporium would like to partner with you to establish and maintain stable oral health. Within Dr Thinus van Niekerk’s practice, a daily, case-by-case collaboration exists between like-minded professionals doing what they love. Together, they offer complete solutions to anyone seeking a partner in oral health, including preventative and restorative dentistry and oral rehabilitation.
Preventative DentistryÂ
Everyone can benefit from a personalised oral hygiene schedule, whether you need to maintain your healthy smile with regular cleaning appointments or have a history of oral disease that necessitates a more focused approach. The practice has invested in advanced equipment from Switzerland in the form of the EMS® system and is excited to introduce the game-changing GBT protocol to Ballito.
Restorative DentistryÂ
Also referred to as general dentistry, the goal is to eliminate disease and restore damage caused to the teeth. While they may use both direct and indirect restorative techniques, they advocate the latter in most cases. The indirect restorative technique allows them to digitally design the restoration and manufacture it from the most appropriate material. This technique ensures accurate and predictable treatment outcomes.
Oral Rehabilitation
A state-of-the-art implant and oral rehabilitation clinic caters to individuals who typically have lost one or more teeth or where a multi-disciplinary treatment is necessary to obtain the best result. The clinic has a fully digitally integrated laboratory specialising in guided implant placement under local and general anaesthesia.

RESTORATIVE AESTHETICS
Dr Jess Beningfield is a GP with a special interest in aesthetic medicine and women’s health, practising at Fraiche Aesthetic Clinic in Ballito. She believes that, for women, hormone health and an individual’s aesthetic opinion of themself greatly impact mental and overall well-being.
Dr Beningfield strongly emphasises embracing individual beauty and celebrating what makes us unique. She encourages her patients to take small, regular steps that help to preserve natural beauty and prevent early signs of ageing. Aesthetic medicine can be practised in a preventative, restorative, natural and subtle way! Ageing is all about skin, external features and the changes happening throughout the body. This is not something to be afraid of. The dramatic drop in hormones during menopause affects not only skin and hair but also the brain, bones, cardiovascular system and just about every other system in the body. Addressing this is important for aesthetic reasons and longevity.
For women in their reproductive years, conditions such as PCOS and hypothalamic amenorrhea and navigating the use of contraceptives can have a significant impact on overall health. At Fraiche, Dr Beningfield and the team of specialised therapists can assist you in developing an aesthetic treatment plan to achieve your goals.

LOOKING INSIDE
Living in Ballito since 2020, Dr van de Made has grown very attached to our gorgeous coastal town. An endocrinologist is a specialist physician that has sub-specialised in all the endocrine organs and associated disorders. The endocrine system includes the pituitary gland, thyroid, pancreas, adrenal glands and endocrine parts of the reproductive tract such as the ovaries and testes.
She assists people with diabetes and/or insulin resistance, weight concerns, thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism, Graves’ disease, thyroiditis and various benign and cancerous tumours, and osteoporosis. She also manages patients with hormone disturbances such as growth disorders and various reproductive disorders including PCOS and menopause. Her approach to treatment is to explain the science to patients – usually with many drawings – and then discuss treatment plans based on clinical guidelines and evidence-based medicine. Her future goal is to prevent disease in her patients. She plans to start a fracture liaison service with orthopaedic surgeons and place more focus on pre-diabetes management and gestational diabetes.
Dr van de Made feels that endocrinology is an area of medicine that continues to evolve and teach her, much like Sherlock Holmes says: “Education never ends Watson. It is a series of lessons with the greatest for the last.”
