Soak up the view of our coast while you get a fresh cut, and if you’re lucky, there could be dolphins and whale sightings too!

Getting your hair cut can be a monthly thing or randomly when you feel your hair is out of control. We sit down in the chair and look straight at ourselves in the mirror; maybe we dose off and daydream of being on a pristine beach in the tropics. How about living the dream and seeing the beautiful coast while getting your hair cut? Yes, that’s right! Meet Anthony, your next barber. “The view is what makes my barbershop unique! I think my shop may be the only barbershop in the world where you can watch dolphins and whales play in the ocean instead of looking at yourself in the mirror whilst you get your haircut,” Anthony says.

Okay, so let’s start at the very beginning. Anthony first opened a barbershop eight years ago in Umhlanga Village with his business partner, which he still co-owns today. Anthony is a qualified hairstylist and barber. He studied and did an apprenticeship at Innovation Hair Co and Academy, where he worked under the award-winning Brendan Broedelet. He also did an advanced hairstyling course at Vidal Sassoon in London.

At First, Tony’s Barbershop in Salt Rock started as a side project a couple of years ago, cutting friends’ hair from his home after hours. It gained momentum quickly when the word got out about a barbershop with a great view. That’s when he realised he was on to something and decided to turn his deck space at home into Tony’s Barbershop, and here he is today. “It’s a place where you could get a haircut and have a beer whilst relaxing watching the waves break,” Anthony says.

Anthony is not only a barber but also owns a Guesthouse called Villa Marguerite on the property next door, which keeps him busy when he’s not cutting hair. As a busy man, he still has time to enjoy some downtime, “When I’m not working, you can find me mostly at the beach or travelling. I love to go on surf trips up and down the coast from Mozambique to Jeffrey’s Bay. I love to travel abroad too; however, the pandemic has made this tricky over the past two years,” Anthony says.

He must have many amazing stories and memories to share from his travels and surf trips. Still, he will also have many memories that he has created with his clients while finding his favourite thing about his business, which to Anthony is watching every client unwind while getting their haircut. I think watching the ocean calms the mind and soothes the soul. The pandemic, the riots and the recent floods have been taxing on us, so it’s great to see my clients leaving looking super relaxed with a great haircut,” he says with a content grin.

If you were to ever live on the beach or have a fantastic view of the coast from your home, I’m sure you’d also want to start your morning right, watching the sunrise over the ocean. Although that is in the early morning hours and getting up to get to the grind is a bit much as it is, Anthony seems to have a routine. “I’m usually up early as I like to get a surf in before I start my day. Having the shop right by the ocean makes this pretty easy. Haha,” Anthony says with a giggle.

In this day and age, people are looking for unique experiences, and I can say that this is one of them. You can watch the waves travelling our ocean and enjoy a cold one while getting your haircut. Who wouldn’t say that sounds like a dream? Find Tony’s Barbershop in Salt Rock and book your next groom with a view.
