Coffee for the Dreamers, Mavericks, Misfits, and Rebels.
On Wednesday morning, the Fabmags team found themselves in a space that wasn’t our usual office setting. At 8 a.m., we converged at Skyline Coffee Salt Rock to enjoy the fresh air, scrumptious snacks and good coffee.Â
The Skyline brand was launched in 2015 by a husband and wife team, Jamie and Dylan, with the Salt Rock branch at Sage Centre opening its doors in 2021. Last year, Ballito local Darren Lewis took over the franchise and continues to pour innovation and passion into it.Â
We were shown to the deck area and settled in, getting comfortable while soaking in the rays of sunlight streaming through the trees. The rest of the cafe was filled with people grabbing their morning coffees, settling down to begin work for the day (made possible by their secure parking and fast Wi-Fi), or grabbing breakfast while basking in the crisp morning air.
You can see how much the North Coast community has come to love this cafe by the smiles and excited chatter from patrons and staff. Open seven days a week from 6:30 a.m., early risers can grab a freshly made cuppa and delicious meal, ready to take on the day. They have a wall inside the cafe dedicated to showcasing local artists and businesses, giving back to the community. Of course, there’s also their branded merchandise (the T-shirts are my favourite!) and beans available for you to take some Skyline home with you.
One by one, our drinks arrived. Made with Skyline’s own brew, we got to experience the superior quality of their coffee. Our team has diverse tastes and tried quite a bit from the menu. The classic cappuccinos were delicious, the iced coffees were smooth and refreshing and the wholesome matcha was invigorating. My own decaffeinated cafe mocha was the perfect blend of chocolate and espresso, creating an ideal balance between sweet and bitter.Â
The cafe boasts a menu full of light meals, pastries and cakes for you to munch on. We were treated to a full spread by the friendly and seasoned staff. Flaky and golden almond and chocolate croissants followed the drinks, accompanied by crumbly blueberry muffins. There was an entire platter of their iconic banana bread, with a chocolate chip option, and Nutella spread for us to indulge in. We definitely understood why their banana bread is such a big hit – we all found ourselves reaching for another piece.Â
It didn’t stop there either! Soon open sandwiches arrived with a variety of toppings including smashed avocado, specialty cheeses and salami and banana with peanut butter, all served on freshly made sourdough bread. We were in foodie paradise, but the Skyline team wasn’t done spoiling us just yet. Then came the toasted sandwiches, hot off the press. We enjoyed fillings of the well-known and loved chicken and mayonnaise with gherkins, a basil pesto-based sandwich and one with aubergines and cheese.Â
Leaving feeling warm, fuzzy and fulfilled, I was already thinking about when I could have my next Skyline visit. KwaZulu-Natal will soon welcome cafe number three in Durban North, while still providing businesses with their wholesale coffee beans. It’s where it all begins and ends… with good coffee!
