A Decade of Doing Work Differently

Live better. Work smarter. Stay local.

In the heart of Umhlali, The Workstation isn’t just another private serviced office space; it’s a slice of history, a touch of design, and a whole lot of community spirit. Business partner Conrad recently took us down memory lane, sharing how this relaxed yet dynamic space came to life.

It all began in 2004, when Conrad bought a vacant stand in the middle of Umhlali from local real estate legend Don Edwards. Although he didn’t build immediately, the vision for something different was already in motion.

In 2006, he partnered with Snow (yes, that’s a person, not the weather), and together they developed one of the area’s most iconic buildings. Originally designed as KZN’s largest Interior Design Centre, complete with showroom elegance, cutting-edge interiors, and a flair for style, it catered to the booming North Coast residential market and officially opened in 2008.

But when the recession hit, reinvention became the key to survival. Portions of the building were converted into serviced offices for friends, a shift that would eventually shape its future.

By 2015, demand had grown so much that over 2,500 m² of space was transformed into private serviced offices, all infused with a distinct Ballito vibe. At the heart of it? Conrad’s impressive surfboard collection is proudly displayed at the entrance.

Word spread quickly, and soon The Workstation had become home to some of the North Coast’s most recognised businesses, all drawn to its fresh, flexible approach to work.

More Than Just an Office
So, who works here? The Workstation welcomes everyone from solo entrepreneurs to teams of 20 or more looking for a space that reflects their individuality. Tenants include professionals, freelancers, consultants, creatives, life coaches, traders, and even security firms.

What unites them? A shared philosophy: working smarter. With reliable high-speed internet, backup power, and distraction-free private offices, they spend less time commuting and more time being productive. And when the day ends, they embrace the North Coast lifestyle, whether it’s the beach, golf course, Holla Trails, or spending time with their kids. It’s no wonder more people are semi-migrating to the North Coast.

At the Heart: The Eatery
At the centre of it all is The Eatery – it is the beating heart of the building, a place to share a meal, bump into familiar faces, make new friends, laugh a little louder, and plan how to use all that extra free time.

A Community That Lasts
The Workstation is more than a collection of offices; it’s a partner to its tenants and a contributor to the wider community.

The team’s presence is well known beyond the building, often spotted in their distinctive camo uniforms assisting local initiatives: cutting and clearing verges, installing inverters at traffic lights, planting gardens on off-ramps, and even cleaning beaches.

It’s a workspace built on connection, collaboration, and a commitment to community.

The Spirit of The Workstation
It isn’t just a place to plug in your laptop. It’s a local landmark, unpretentious, relaxed, and deeply rooted in the community it calls home. And honestly? We wouldn’t have it any other way. The Workstation keeps it simple: walk in, rent an office, and get started. No fuss. No long-term commitments.
