Journey to Success

Words: Carla Gailey

This editions Power Couple is the dynamic duo, Peter and Jody Cameron, husband and wife, mom and dad and most of all, best friends. I chatted to Peter and Jody about life, love and what it’s like being in a powerful marriage and staying the best of friends.

Although it wasn’t love at first sight for Peter and Jody Cameron, this didn’t stop them from embarking on an incredible journey together filled with fun, laughter, two gorgeous kids and sweet romance! Peter and Jody met through work almost 10 years ago. “I remember Pete had to get my details out of the visitors register book at a development he was working on, he plucked up the courage and invited me to a rugby match at the stadium, I had never watched a whole game in my life! It ended up being the biggest party we’ve ever had and I guess our relationship materialized from there”, Jody nostalgically explains. “Looking back now, it was all very romantic”, she says sweetly. Peter is originally from Pietermaritzburg and attended Maritzburg College before he moved to our beautiful town of Ballito 12 years ago, when he started working for Simbithi. Jody grew up in Zululand and later moved to the highway area. “I moved to Ballito to be with the love of my life”, she says confidently.

Young and in love and having the time of their lives together, Peter and Jody fell into their whirlwind relationship and soon realised they were the perfect fit for each other. They moved into their very first home together. “It was very exciting, our first home had barely any furniture to start, so we were really excited to get to build a home together from scratch”, they explain. The two were married almost 8 years ago at the picturesque Palm Dune Beach Lodge in Blythedale, in a low-key, relaxed and intimate beach setting over-looking the Indian Ocean with their close friends and family. “We wanted our wedding to be focused on being with each other and with those we love the most. We didn’t prepare much, we allowed the wedding to flow its natural course and we couldn’t have asked for more”, Jody explains. “Jody works for a local orphanage called Summerhill House, it’s her dream job. She loves that she’s able to make a different in the children’s’ lives”, Peter explains. Peter is the director of sales at Brettenwood Coastal Estate, he loves everything to do with real estate, from conceptualizing, marketing, selling and developing and feels like he’s doing the job of his dreams too.

They have two beautiful daughters, Coco who is seven years old and Scarlett who is 20 months. “Our girls have added more love to our lives and have brought us even closer together”, they add. While Peter and Jody aren’t busy with their dream jobs, they love spending quiet quality time together, with and without their kids. Jody further explains, “One of our favourite things to do together is to drive around Ballito looking at all of the properties we either want to live in or dream of renovating, we get to chat and catch up a lot in the car while admiring the beautiful environment we live in.” The two of them have a few secret dinner spots they love to wine and dine at. “It’s our alone time away”, the Camerons agree.

Spending time with family and friends is important for them. “On the weekends, we like to go away for mini adventures with the kids, Pete calls it ‘going on tour’, we end up in remote, fantastic places and we meet crazy, wonderful people, spending time connecting and having a laugh with them”, she laughs. Besides adventuring together, they find nothing better than nesting at home in their little bubble, on a rainy weekend with their girls eating bacon sandwiches and juice for breakfast, attending church at Freedom House, disconnecting from technology and spending the day as a family. Peter and Jody firmly agree that a Sunday night movie is always a must for them. “Over the past few years, we have been really blessed to have had some phenomenal people come into our lives. Our focus has shifted significantly from being as successful as we can for ourselves, to helping and uplifting as many people as we can on our journey to success”, they agree. “We are both really passionate about what we do and spend a lot of time working off each other’s ideas and energy”, says Peter. The pair are involved in several charities, Summerhill House is Jody’s baby and Peter is involved with Partners for Possibility amongst many other fund-raising initiatives. This couple truly embody the term Power, two extraordinary people, successful in their respective fields while still finding the time to help others, raise a family and remain in-love so effortlessly. Talk about relationship goals!
